Was I Embarrassed?
A flight of our servicing commando unit had been deployed to the far corner of a large bomber airfield. We had been ordered to post twentyfour hour guards around our corner and let no one approach and no one of our flight was to leave our little corner on any pretext whatsoever.
After several nights of activity,on our part,we were told that operations were ended and we could now fraternise with airfield personnel. Our CO now met the station commander who told him that the station was having a sports day in two days time and that, if we were not called away he would welcome our boys joining in and
entering events.
Our CO thought that this would be a good idea, giving us a break after being couped up and that we could enter events and use NAFFI facilities, bearing in mind that not a word was to be passed concerning what we had been up to.Next day all our unit was excited and many of us entered some of the activities, from tent pitching to desembling and assembling the bren gun and many shooting and sporting contests.
Come sports day we were all raring to go,and as we were favoured with good weather, free from our coup and made very welcome by the station chaps,a good time was had by all.
The following afternoon a general parade was called and the station commander, our CO and a squadron leader mounted a small platform. The airfield CO gave a short address then the squadron leader began calling out the winners of the various events.I was delighted to hear that my team of myself and the two lads who had asked me to join them had won the tent pitching competition. But as the reading out of the list continued I felt a mounting embrassment for hardly a mention was made of any of the station chaps having won anything. Our lads had lifted almost all of the first and seconds, and sometimes thirds also.
It struck me ,slightly belatedly now, that we had been most unfare, especially as my two helpers and myself had been erecting and striking our tent every few days over the past year, giving us plenty of practice. The training our unit had had, meant that the scrambling net climbing, assembling the Bren gun and target shooting etc came quite easily to them.
