Sixty years ago today I was in Central Burma with my Squadron. We had been briefed to go on a sortie which was suddenly cancelled. The CO called me into the Officers’ tent. I was told that the Japanese had surrendered. I felt tremendous relief. We started to celebrate when suddenly we heard explosions - a party of 200 Japs had got through the camp perimeter, throwing hand grenades and destroying some aircraft. There were a number of casualties.
