This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by CSV/大象传媒 Radio Nottingham on behalf of Eric Middleton with his permission. The Author fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

The 50th Telegraph Operating Section Royal Signals were quartered in a number of Nissen Huts, one of which was used as a small NAAFI, the front half of it being a canteen and the rear half the manageress鈥 living quarters.

The Manageress was called Mrs Cholmondley and she took great pains to point out that this should be pronounced 鈥淐humley鈥.

She was succeeded by a Mrs Bottomley and that lady STRONGLY objected to her mane being pronounced to rhyme with Chumley!
