I don’t know why I was crossing that small park area in Penge. It wasn’t my normal way home from school and it was the lunch break. I knew my dad was home sick or at least in bed. I was a conscientious kid and would go home to make him a cup of tea. Why was I in that park? Everything happened so fast. A plane came over the top of the trees firing its machine gun. I sensed that I could see the pilot in his cockpit. Strangely there was an experience of deja vue. I’d seen the situation in so many adventure comics. In spite of this, I was scared and felt so alone in an open space. Along with others I ran for shelter and huddled up with the adults. Some one said the Baker had caught it in the Bread Basket. I started to cry and told them my dad was home ill. When the threat passed, I ran home to tell my dad what happened.
I tried to explain to him my near death experience and the fate of the Baker but it didn’t seem to bother him — he was in a good mood and asked me to get him a handful of raisins to eat in bed.
