AT ADELA SHAW ORTHOPAEDIC HOSPITAL WITH SOME OF THE 'CROCKS'. WHAT LOVELY LADS THEY WERE!
I was born in the village of West Ayton (nr. Scarborough) in 1917. My father was a miller.
At the outbreak of WWII I was working as a shopping assistant at Brown鈥檚 General Store in Wykeham, near Pickering. There was only three staff in that shop, Mr and Mrs Brown and me. Mr Brown鈥檚 proud boast was that his shop 鈥渟old everything from a pin to an elephant.鈥 One of its best customers was Lord Downs, who was the local bigwig. And as he used the establishment, so did almost everyone else of note in the district. Consequently the shop thrived.
I was a voluntary member of the Red Cross. This involved going to Scarborough General Hospital from time to time for first aid training.
