Called up in1941, Winchester, Yorkshire, Chippenham.Landing D-Day 1944, Le Armel, Normandy. Was attached to the 8th Armoured Brigade. Had engagements throughout the North West, finnishing at Bremerhaven, Germany in 1945.Fought in the battle of Badray, the breakout around Carne, protecting the flanks of the Tyneside Scottish. My weapon in Normandy was the P.I.A.T. Our first objective was the church at Tessel Wood, fighting in the cemetery. I was told there were about 10 Panther Tanks close by and the officer told me to deal with them. I mentioned that there was one close by, and going across the track to get in position I wouldnt have a chance. He disagreed with me and said they were not that close, with which he looked around the corner of the church wall and the German Tank commander shot a burst which knocked his helmet off and marked the church wall with ricochet, the marks of which are there to this day! (Myself and veterans visit every year) Eventually I had a go at a Tank, without success. The PIAT was the most unreliable weapon.
