I was in the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and had been captured by the Germans during the landing at St Valery on 10th July, 1940.
I was taken prisoner and marched across Northern Europe to a prison camp.
I had a job on a farm there and worked with dairy cows. And one day I stole a chicken. I hid it under my coat, took it back to the POW camp, stripped it, boiled it and divided it amongst the others.
On another occasion I borrowed a trumpet from a Pole in the camp and practiced a Xmas tune on it (Xmas 1944). I wqas so hungry at that time that I sold the trumpet for 3 eggs and 2 small loaves, which were gone in 5 mins. I was sad at that - I always wanted to take it home with me.
