We used to go to York for holidays. I was about three when they sunk a boat and sent a bomb in one of the warehouses.
There was a pub and the machine gun went straight through the glass window without breaking it.
Cliffords Tower was on a mound. It had straight walls and a bomb came down and didn’t explode. It was spread eagled.
I remember being on the train with my gas mask and sitting on a suit case.
I was born in Hinckley, Nutts Lane.
Once I was at the piano and a plane came over — five bombs dropped on the lane. The shudder made me move away from the piano. They all missed the power station.
Dad was a coalman so he didn’t have to go away.
