All the kids from Yarmouth rd. walked together for start of term Sept 1944, the older ones herding the young ones, I was a young one and the Cummings sisters (Shirley and Vera)among the old ones. They lived next door and took full responsibility for getting this grubby 5yr old to school on my first day(could this scenario take place in this day and age?).I recall within just a short time the sirens going off and spending all morning under my assigned table until the all clear.I think it was a school lunch(anyone remember?)but I know it was a little bottle of milk all to myself, and it was great!!.After lunch we had another siren and again got familiar with the underside of the table. We went home the same way we got there, big kids herding little kids.I told my mum "I like school" little did I know that was the best school day I would have .
