The battalion was stationed in Badia Disusinana, Italy, in November 1944, when 25 year old Ted jumped into blazing trucks that had been struck by enemy shells.
At first he tried dousing the flames, then concentrated on salvaging valuable equipment including petrol tanks and ammunition. He even removed wheels from the trucks before they could be destroyed by fire, ignoring exploding petrol cans, bursting ammunition and heavy enemy shelling.
Ted's war days began on January 18, 1940 and in 1944 he received a medal for an act of gallantry when he was a private in the 2nd/7th battalion.
