My uncle Allen Cooper was awarded the Polish gilver cross for his bravery at Monte Cassino, but he had to wait 30 years to receive it, here is his story. During the 1944 battle the germans had pin-pointed the source of radio signals and wiped them out, Allen then with 77th Highland Field Artillery was the one that got away but only just, as through an intelligence source he was informed that 6 crack panzar paratroopers was out to locate him, kill him and blow up a nearby bridge, he commanded an officer and 6 soldiers who eventually killed 4 of the paratroopers and took 2 prisoners, his mission was succesful, the poles who had took a beating eventually took control of the monastry, they raised the flag, in his memoirs Allen has said that a PENANT was raised not a full sized flag, he was recognised by the Poles for his bravery but never the British as his work was always secret.
