between the ages of 6 and 11 i lived in morton in the marsh, with a great aunt above a shop that is still there, but is not a barbers/sweet/tobacconist shop as it was then. during the war we had american army forces in a camp on the edge of the town, also the american airforce at an airfield near little compton. as all child did at that time we used be befriended by some of the soldiers my sister and i were friends with al and his pal which i can no longer remember his name. we used to say to them got any gum chum, a typical expression at the time. they wer incredibly generous with handy out candy as they called sweets. which at the time were in very short supply if not impossible to obtain. they were great fun to be with, they played games with all the town kids. the part i recall the most must have been in the late spring of 1944 prior to d day,
one day they called at the shop telling us that they were going away, and would write if they could, sadly they did not. they told they thought that their army was about to visit mr hitler. two days later the town was absolutely deserted, all the kids were very sorry to see them go, it meant there were no more free sweets, mercinary little blighters wern"t we. we never did find out what happened to them, i rather suspect the worst.
