I was 19 and worked as a hairdresser at "Monica's" in White Lion Street during the early part of the war.
On this particular day I had my own hair done and so sat under the dryer for half an hour. It must have been about 4.30 when I left to catch the bus home. Nobody had told me the air-raid siren had sounded.
I walked down the Back-of-the-Inns, turned right at "Mathes" the bakers shop, walked through the passage and up on to Castle Meadow where I would have caught the number 7 bus to Brundall where I lived with my parents.
Well. I was suddenly grabbed by an Air Raid Warden - "Can't you hear that plane above us, its a German plane firing bullets. Don't you know there is an air raid on; are you asking to be killed?"
I was so terrified it was only then that I realised the plane above us was firing bullets.
We hastily ran into the passage way where I cried so much, as did he.
When I had calmed down and was able to explain my stupidity he was forgiving.
He saved my life. I wonder if he is still around and remembers. God bless him if he is.
