Being a farm labourer we lived at Top Valley Farm in Bulwel, which is now a huge housing estate.
We had evacuees from London the girl who was called Ursula Barrat (I wonder were she is now?)
We, my brother and I didn't like her very much except when her parcels arrived from her dad, it contained chocolate. She talked funny and gave away all our secrets, one of which we got into a lot of bother with.
Our house was next to the Italian prisoners of war camp, we would watch the men pass our house on their way to work in the fields nearby.
We thought they were ok so each night on the return Steve and I squeezed under the wire into the camp and talked, well tried to talk to them but they talked funny too.
On one day Ursula insisted she came with us and reluctantly agreed, she threatened to "tell" if we didn't take her.
The Italians were very friendly and looking back maybe we reminded them of the families they had left behind.
They let us roam freely and gave us little gifts usually dollies made from corn or special friend I had made me a ring from a threepenny bit which I treasured until I lost it squeezing through the wire.
We came across a large tin of green sticky paint which we managed to open. Ursula was still winging about us doing things that was"naughty" so Steve held her and I painted her head!!!!!!!!!!!! that shut her up.
She went back home screamiming her lovely curls all green.
Immeadiately all hell broke loose, Steve and I got the belt (dads leather one, you knew if it was coming your way by the look on his face as he unfastened the buckle).
Ursala had to have all her hair cut off, and we had very sore haciendas for days.
