When the Germans bombed Sheffield, straggling planes which had still got their bombs dropped them on Chesterfield. I saw the bomb doors open and the bombs coming down. I was on my paper round on a hill about 1941 and I could see the bombs drop in the valley. I thought I could see the school being bombed but it was worse, it was the Chip Shop. There were 11 killed, 10 adults and a baby, I was about 13 years old. They found the baby in the rafters.

My dad walked to work and the Germans were machine gunning the town. You can still see the bullet marks in the front Post Office building. A German was shot down on the outskirts and after school we went to see the wreck and collected to souvenirs to swap.
