I was at Northgate School, Ipswich, during the war. We were evacuated to Leicester, but I came back to town after three months. At School we all had an allotment plot to look after. We collected acorns for animal feed.

There were many air raids on Ipswich. We were quite a target. For example Ransoms were making mine-seekers and parts of aircraft. There were pill boxes across town. There were searchlights in the dock area. My father was in the Home Guard and went out fire-watching.

I was at Fletcher Road one day, there was snow on the ground. I looked up and saw bombs come down. They hit the houses and seriously damaged them.
