I can clearly remember a self-contained "mini village", which housed munition workers mainly from the Bristol Aircraft Company.
The majority of these people brought aircraft engine skills up North, to teach the local people all about engineering - the majority of jobs in Lancashire were either in mining or textiles.
The locals nicknamed the prefabs "Sawdust City" or "Toytown", but they had more mod-cons than any of the local houses.
