My grandfather Captain William Woodman had served in the Navy during WW1. He was at Scapa Flow Scotland after 1918 to witness the sinking of the Grand German Fleet.
He served in WW2 as the Captain of the ship - The Preserver - which was the largest salvage vessel in the Navy. About 1942, his ship hit a mine off the coast of Milford Haven West Wales.
At the time, his son First Officer Will Woodman was serving on the same ship. The impact of the mine blew his son and other sailors off the ship into the cold water of the Bristol Channel. My Grandfather dived into the water and saved his son from drowning. Out of all the many heroic acts during WW2, I think that it was a wonderful brave thing to do and so rewarding to save your own son from death.
I wonder how many other stories there are from WW2 where a father saves his son from death by an heroic act.
