29th Nov.
We arrived at Greenock, changed at Glasgow, at Preston and Blackburn and arrived at
Burnley at midnight to find Joyce’s father with taxi.
30th Nov.
Reported to Portsmouth Barracks.

Jan.
My last assignment, Senior in Naval party comprising 27 Leading Coders to train for
the purpose of manning telephone exchanges in North Germany ports, my destination
Wilhelmhaven
Training - 1 week London – elementary
3 weeks Scarborough – 10 line office set
2 weeks Great Yarmouth – The real thing – self and another LH assisting
some dozen WRNS on a fully manned operational 200 lines command
board covering Eastern Command. Sorry to leave.
Between these courses a good amount of leave.
May
Kitted out with khaki, on our way about 12th, exceedingly slow progress through
Belgium, Holland and Germany via road and rail. Bridges and roads in terrible state.
2nd June
Eventually arrived at Wilhelmhaven
4th June
Called to office twice
( i) To play soccer for our naval party, 4-0 win, scoring all 4, my last game ever
(ii) To inform me of a signal from Admiralty re my temporary release to the Reserve List.
5th June
Sailed for Harwich on Polish Destroyer and on to Portsmouth. Of course, nobody
had heard of self and the Admiralty signal and two more establishments, up country,
were visited before satisfaction was achieved.
10th June
Arrived home 6.00 a.m.
12th June
Commenced duties at Hyde
21st Oct.
Indefinitely released for civil employment
