Hello i'm Les.
I was born 6th May 1933, we lived at no.6 Vauxhall Place Birmingham. I attended Windsor St Infants School when the war broke out. We were bombed often, some of the raids lasted until the next morning. We sheltered in the anderson shelter which was sited in the grove until the all clear was sounded. One of the longest raids I remember lasted about 13 hours we went into our shelter at 6.30 PM and came out the next morning when the all clear sounded. Children still attended school the next day, most times tired tired through lack of sleep. I and other children would look for shrapnel from the exploded bombs from the night before. Very often the shrapnel would still be warm when you picked it up. This was handed to the A.R.P warden and it was put back to help the war effort.
This is only a tiny account of my war years as a child when peace came it was a joyous time, a heavy load had been lifted off peoples minds. There were celebrations every where, street parties, pianos brought onto the streets, bonfires lit everywhere, and everyone was very happy.
