I loved going to the pictures - i visited the marina every monday. I also went to the Ritz, the Havelock and the Regal Picture House regularly.
It was a Tuesday evening, and I left my 2 year old daughter with my sister Margaret and my father, to go and see Waterloo Bridge at the Regal. I was with my friend, Margery, and we had settled down for a good night out.
About half-way through the picture a warning came up on the screen that the siren had started up, warning of enemy planes arriving. I started panicking for my daughter's safety. I had to leave my friend, ran out of the pictures and into Fawcett Street for the tram.
I could hear planes and see the search lights. The tram took me to Fullwell and as I was running down Neale Street, I looked up and saw the plane in the search lights. I thought the pilot could see me, because the plane was so low. I thought I would never make it home, and imagined being shot at.
I got to my front door and was banging at the door, shouting,"let me in!" My father opened the door as he never went in to the shelter. When I got in, my sister and daughter were in the air raid shelter and all was well. The shelter was like a little house to us as we were in there so much. Thankfully, it did its job.
