We left Liverpool on 26 June 1941 in a convoy. We were so slow that we were ordered to ground to disembark and wait for a future convoy. Orders were then changed and we set sail with an escort of 4 Corvettes and a Destroyer. After 4 days out the Destroyer left us as we were supposed to be out of the danger zone.
The next morning, July 5 1941, we were struck by U Boat96. The ship we were on HMT Anselm sank in 25 minutes. The majority of us (about 800) were picked up by HM Challenger and Starwart. The padre on HMT Anselm, Squadron Leader Pugh, lost his life trying to save some of the wounded. He was awarded The George Cross.
We finally landed at Freetown.
