My Dad decided he needed a new overcoat, which involved a lot of saving up as money was in short supply and Dad was always a most generous man with the little he had. But in due time a coat was ordered from a shop called Steers which was situated opposite to Bearwood Road School.

Eventually we heard from the shop that the coat had been received and was ready for collection. But before Dad could collect it the shop was bombed, it was the same night that the school was raised to the ground. All hope of getting the coat faded.

However, many months went by when a tattered parcel was delivered with the coat inside, rather dusty, but intact. A note came with it to say that as compensation had been paid in full for the premises and stock, there would be no charge.

My Dad was delighted!
