I as 12 years old when my brother and l were evacuated from London to Worthing, when we arrived we climbed into a wagon and were driven round the streets, all the local people were standing at their gates looking at us until finally there was just my brother and myself left. My mother had told us we were to stay together but unfortunately we could not get a billet together so we were taken in by neighbours. Eventually we got a billet where we could share. It was awful, Mrs Hyde had six children and was not very clean, my job was to wash the floor something l had never done before, and we were nearly always hungry. One day my mother came to visit us unexpected and was horrified. She took us home with her and we stayed there until suitable accommodation was found. We still were not together but we both had nice billets, my brother was billeted with a greengrocer so had plenty of vegetables and fruit and l was sent to an elderly couple who were so kind. Mrs Elliot let me have her weekly egg, l was very happy there but returned home when l left school at 15, later l was to go in the WRENS at seventeen and a half.
