As told to CHARLES DINSDALE
1939 there was a recruiting drive for the Territorials. My Dad said to join as even as a 19 year old I thought War was becoming necessary. So on my Dad's advice I joined the 2nd East Riding Yeomanry in May 1939. We went to camp in the July which was at Stockbridge in Hampshire. This was an adventure as I had never been so far. While we were there we went for a drink in Stockbridge - on the way back an Officer stopped and gave a lift to six of us and on the way he said "We'll be needing you chaps in the Autumn when we go to War."
I went home when camp had finished and carried on as usual. I was cleaning windows at a house in Kirkella when I heard it on the news that all Territorials should report to barracks - this was Friday 1 September 1939.
