1940. I was a 16 year old unqualified librarian. I cycled from Elmbridge Farm Elmbridge Road, now the site of Haven Court, to work. I started work at 9am and finished at 5pm. Some Saturdays I worked until 9pm. I worked there for two years but it was considered not essential work. I then went to work on the farm.Money was limited to buy books, only a small number of new books were bought for thr Library. I took my own lunch , which I ate in the basement. Mr Austin the retired Librarian used to go into the Libray as did Mr Hannam Clarke. There were about 6 members of staff. There was wonderful comraderie amongst the staff. Eventually staff left to go into the ATC and Land Army.
