I was about 22 years old and I was called up in 1939. I worked at A Vehicles building 174 in Chilwell. I was making and sending vouchers for when tanks were sent out from depots the vouchers had to follow them.
We were very fortunate as we hardly knew the war was on. There was a theatre, we did lots of dancing. I really enjoyed it, there were one or two who said it was the best years of their lives! We all got on well together, there were thousands of us working there.
Occasionally we鈥檇 get searched on the way in.
Food was always good there, we鈥檇 go into the officers mess - they had plenty of things.
