This photograph was taken through the periscope of HMS Unison (Submarine).
HMS Unison was out on patrol from 10th April and was in the area of St Vito between the 12 & 15th of that month. She moved around the area for several more days and on the 19th found herself in the region of Ustica. Unison was told to stay in that location for another day or so since there were a lot of submarines in the Sicilian channel causing something of a traffic jam. It was during this time that Unison came across the new Italian ship Marco Foscarini, which had a torpedo boat escort. Despite rough weather, Unison fired four torpedoes, two of them hitting their mark and the Italian ship sank. Unison returned to base at Malta on 23rd April. My father was invited to watch the sinking through the periscope by Lt Daniell.
