The 23,722 tons liner: the SS Strathallan was built at Barrow-in-Furness and owned by the Peninsular & Orient Steam Navigation Company Ltd and requisitioned by the War Office as a troopship during the war. Its last Captain was J.H.Biggs CBE.

James Hainey of Dumbarton wrote to say he was on board The SS Dunnotar Castle of the Union Castle Shipping Company that had been requisitioned by The War Office as a troopship.
"I was right behind Strathallan when the torpedo struck but we did not stop to pick up survivors"
James told a poignant story in these few words.
"One troopship had been torpedoed, to attempt rescue, closing down engines would have left Dunnotar Castle a sitting duck placing thousands more at risk. The unfortunate soldiers and nurses in the water had to fend for themselves".
The cruelty of war exposed at it's most rawest.
