BETTY BREWSTER TAKES COD TO NEWCASTLE
鈥淭his story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Anita Howard from the Essex Action Desk CSV on behalf of Betty Gander (nee Brewster) and has been added to the site with her permission. B. Gander fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.鈥
I joined the WRNS in 1942 and was stationed in Fife, Scotland. Once, when going home to Newcastle on leave, I was given a large cod by a fisherman from the fishing village of Anstruther. My friend, Mrs.Butters wrapped it in a tea towel and I left it with her until it was time to depart.
I travelled as far as Edinburgh and wanted to leave it in the luggage van but they wouldn鈥檛 take it. So I hung it in the corridor of the train and disowned it for the 3 hour journey. It smelt very fishy.
When I arrived home it was cooked for dinner and well appreciated by my family.
