I was born at no.1 The Doctors Pond, Dunmow. I attended the Council School in 1942.
Many times we had to use the air raid shelter and I can still remember the smell of the damp concrete. To keep our spirits up we used to sing (usually 鈥淐oming Round The Mountain鈥!)
We were joined by evacuees which meant that we had to have lessons in the Folkes Hall because of unusually large class sizes. We were taught at the Quaker meeting rooms as well. I remember hot bricks to warm the bed, Uncle Mac on the wireless, and I really enjoyed eating 鈥淪pam鈥 !
In 1943 my Mother was ill so we had to move to Chingford. We encountered heavy bombing, and I can remember finding house bricks in my dolls pram..
When my Mother recovered we moved back to Hitchin in Hertfordshire, which proved to be quieter. Eventually we moved back home to Dunmow, and I remember my Mother making a dress for me. (I was five and a half years of age.)
Margaret Joyce.
