In the war you could buy whale meat off ration from the butcher and it was a good way of supplementing rationed meat of which there was very little.

My dad always said emphatically there was no way he'd be eating whale meat.

It tasted a bit fishy but my mother soaked it in vinegar, dried it off and cooked it with lots of onions so that it looked and tasted like steak.

My dad loved it and thought he was having a real treat to have steak.

I also remember my mum making lovely stews that she cooked in a hay box.
