Joseph Diable was my father adn a Royal Naval Gunner servng on HMS Coringa. He was lost at sea on June 22nd 1940 age 27 yrs old. He left Agnes my mother, who was then 6 months pregnant and myself age 3 yrs old. James my brother was born during an air raid on 7th Sep. 1940 during which the nursing home was plunged into darkness.
After the birth, my mother arrived home to our tiny two bedroomed house which had been damaged during the bombing. With help from neighbours and friends we survived.
My mother was offered a place in the Saliors Orphanage in Liverpool for my brother and I. I can remember we did not want to go. She took us home and said she would work and look after us herself.
She became a mechanical fitter at the Birkenhead Bus Depot- just one of the many jobs she did. A sure fighter and my hero.
