Kate Oatham - Aged 4
This story was submitted to the People's War web site by a volunteer from Age Concern Dorchester on behalf of Kate and has been added to the site with her permission. Kate fully understands the site's terms and conditions
My first Memory of the war was seeing a man in long dark clothing, some sort of headgear and goggles cutting the railings off our side garden. We thought he was the devil and were terrified.
Sometime later our father told us that the huge gates at the end of the drive had been taken as well. He said that he had seen the gates & railings in a dump. They had never been used for the war effort. My father tried to get them back after the war but was not allowed to have them back.
