On the night of November 20th 1944 C Company of the 2/5th Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment had captured the enemy strong point at Castiglione, Italy. My father in law's section was sited in front of the forward platoon position at Casa Salambrina.
During the early part of the night five enemy attempts were made to penetrate the platoon area and each was successfully dealt with by his section. When two casualties were incurred he successfully re organised the position re sited the remainder and evacuated the wounded men.
At about 05.00 hours an enemy tank approached and subjected the position to intense fire. My father in law returned fire and assisted the platoon commander to site the Piat. When the haystacks on the position were fired he led his section under fire from the tank to a fresh position and was able to assist in warding off an enemy infantry attack made on the left side of the position before dawn.
My father in law died in August he very seldom spoke of the war or his part in it -but my mother in law had kept a cuttings from the local paper and that is where we learned of how he got his medal.
My Mother in Law learned of the award of the Miliary Medal while my father in law was a prisoner of the E L A S in Greece.
