My mother has told me the story of her grandfather Charles Samuel Thomas who worked on Bristol Docks during World War 2, he was aged 76.

The docks were bombed on 11th April 1941 The houses around my great grandfathers home were levelled to the ground. This included houses in Hanover Place.

My mum Patricia Margaret Thomas, her mother Annie Margaret Thomas, and her Uncle Richard Thomas were living with Charles at the time.

The bombing left the house standing but it later had to be demolished due to the structural damage.

The Albion Pub next door remained standing as did many other pubs in the area.

My great grandfather and his family returned to his home town of Portishead where he remained until he died in November 1944 at the age of 79.

I often think of what it must be like when we drive along Cumberland Road. There is a house on the site of 131 Cumberland Road, adjacent to Spike Island.
I know other people who also had families in the area and were affected by the bombing, who will probably want to share their experiences.
