On VE day, the school I was at held a thanksgiving service. Quite a few old boys, brothers and fathers had died, though nothing like as many as in the 1914-18 war. 700 boys sang as never before. One of the hymns was "Glorious things of thee are spoken" with the stirring tune by F R Haydn.

Since the Germans sang the tune to different words — "Deutschland uber alles" - many other people probably sang that beautiful hymn on VE day.
