We were addicted to the local cinema, which was then the Priory cinema, and sometimes went more than twice a week. Cowboys and Indians was a favourite game and after viewing many of the war games we played English and Germans. Not many of the boys wanted to play Germans, so the girls were co-opted. We generally had the run of the streets because there was very little traffic in the way of cars and lorries unless there was an occasional delivery milk lorry or something of that sort so the streets were ours. We played block and skipping, which was not then considered primarily a girlie game because it got quite hectic at time. We tied skipping ropes to lampposts and swung on them like Tarzan and generally made our own entertainment.
