I was born in Wigan, Lancashire in April 1932 and was 7 years old when the war broke out. We spent a number of nights in the shelter in our back garden and we could hear Liverpool and Manchester being bombed. Luckily Wigan avoided any war damage. Mother used to take us to Liverpool for shopping and we occasionally had to dive for the air raid shelter when the siren sounded.
Living in the North West we had lots of evacuees come up to Lancashire. Holidays in those days always saw us going to Blackpool as my father worked on the railways and there was always a lot of RAF personnel marching up and down the promenade. Father also served in the Home Guard and St. Johns Ambulance.
For a time our school was closed due to there being a shortage in teachers. From 1949 to
1950 I did National Service in the Royal Army Pay Corps, serving at Devizes and Aldershot. Interestingly, my brother still lives in the house in Wigan that I was born in.
