RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German U Boat off south west Ireland and this was instrumental in persuading the USA to enter the war (there was another sinister reason). The controversy of the Lusitania was whether she was a legitimate target or an unarmed merchant ship. She was carrying small arms ammunition, shrapnel shells and what happened to the 400 tons of gun cotton that disappeared from the jetty in New York? She was built to admiralty specification and had gun positions built in to her.
