Born in 1937 I saw SW London during the war through very young eyes. My Father a regular soldier at the start of the war was away the whole of the war duration.
We lived in Landseer Street in Battersea and my mother took me for regular walks in Batersea Park. There were often air raids during these walks and we sheltered in the Park. Following one very intensive bombing, aimed at Clapham Junction and the rail links, our area was hit badly. On returning we found our home and surrounding houses completely demolished. My Mother had lost everything, house, furniture, cloths, food, everything!
After reporting we were issued, clothing, food, a little money and after a nights stay at a shelter were 'billited' with a family in Earlsfield and finally found a house in Southfield where we spent many happy years.
The logistics behind rehousing and caring for those made homless from the bombing was fantistic. The dedicated people doing this type of work were wonderful.
