I was born in Portsmouth where I lived with my mother and three sisters. We were bombed out of our home and all evacuated to Reading in Berkshire. When I was 14 I left school and went to work in a jam factory owned by the CWS. My job was to stick labels on jam jars, you couldn鈥檛 leave when you wanted to, and you just had to keep going. I had several accidents and therefore was sacked! I think this was in about 1944.
My sisters went their own way, but I, being the youngest in the family, came to Cornwall with my mother to look after my grandmother in Penzance. I went to work in the newsagents (DURRANTS) and married the newsagent鈥檚 son.
