This story was submitted to the people's war site by Sophie Chapman from St George's school, Broadstairs and has been added to the website on behalf of Gilbert Hills with his permission and he fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
I can remember when the grocers in Queen street, Ramsgate suffered from a direct hit from a bomb which, also affected the surrounding shops. This was a terrible thing because it was the biggest grocers in Kent and several people were killed. I can remember turning round and seeing 5 people who had been gunned down from enemy planes, lying down on the ground amongst all the rubble. I was in the fire service so we were called out and had to clear away all the debris which, is when i saw someone's foot, a man's i think, with only half a sock on lying amongst it all. Later on that day i was called out to clear stray bombs away from a gully on top of a building which, is when i found a man lying there with many wounds and he only had one foot. The emergency services were very suprised when i told them that i knew where the other foot was.
