This story was submitted to the peoples war website by Simon Gulliford from St Georges school Broadstairs and has been added on behalf of Mr R F White with his permission.
I was born just before war broke out and grew up only knowing about war not peace. Our primary school was bombed in new road chingford. After that I went to St Edberts which was also damaged in a bomb attack so our new school was three buildings with no playground. I remember a Prisoner of war camp near to the school behind barb wire. inside this, were italian prisoners of war. One man used to give me sweets. One day we were playing n the Chingford plains and I saw a v2 rocket being chsed by a spitfire, but the rocket was going too fast for the plain. suddenly a mosquito hedge hopped from no where and shot down the bomb which shattered in the air into pieces. this was exciting for 2pm on a wednesday. The nose cone spiralled down after it had been shot and we watched it land just off chingford plains and as it was packed with tnt it exploded leaving a big 25ft crater.
We always used to throw ourselves in the kerb when we thought there was an attack which would often get us soaking wet, but then we could stay off school as our folks thought it was raining.
