As teenage boys, we were well aware of the fact that almost every house in Hull had a gas meter and the vast majority of these were coin-operated.
After the raids while most youngsters were running around collecting shrapnel, my friends and I used to carry out what we termed as a 'Gas Attack'. This involved searching bombed-out properties for their gas meter to see how much cash we could 'recover'.
While we spent much of war rich, in teenager terms, we were very lucky not to get caught and I still feel guilty to this day!
