I joined the WRENS in 1943. I can remember one day I was at Norfolk House typing up the notes for the invasion of Sicily near an open window in my office. You had to have 6 copies of everything, which you used carbon paper for. I had not noticed but one of the copies blew out the window. The next thing I knew the Admiral was asking to see me. An officer had been walking in the garden and found it. They all thought it was sabotage. I was very lucky, it took a lot of explaining.
At the Invasion of Normandy we went across in the August 2 months after the men. We went in 2 boats, but one was bombed with our supplies of cuttlery, bedding and supplies on. When we arrived we had to use cardboard boxes for 2 weeks until more supplies could be sent.
