Taken by Denis Price of the 大象传媒 People's War Team, 大象传媒 Open Centre, Hull.
I was about four and a half years old and attending what we called Hornsea Little School, close to Hornsea Mere behind the Market Place' and it would have been 1945.
We were playing in the schoolyard when I recall one teacher saying to another that the war had ended.(in Europe of course).
It's impact on my four year old mind must have been considerable as I'd always assumed that the only reason we kids went to school was because of the war.I promptly ran home to my Granny's just around the corner, she asked why I'd come home so early and I told her, 'because the war was over'.I'd no need to attend anymore. Her response was immediate, she smacked me and marched me back to school. I,ve never forgotten it, lucky for some I suppose!
