My father ran Hurtle Hill Farm and as a small boy I can remember Austrians, Italians and Germans coming to work on the farm. My father said that the Austrians were particularly hard working.
The prisoners came from Penzac Court.
I went to Astley School as a child.
They owned a horse that was half cart horse and half horse and the Germans used to ride the other horses on the farm and race it, but as it was half cart horse it always used to win.
I was a young man by now about 18 or 19 and I had learnt to drive by driving round the farm. My friends brought motorbikes. I also got a part time job watching the orchards.
I can remember the German's names, Albert Scharer and Tony Riniker. Albert settled in England and got married and had a family. Tony became a barber, unfortunatley he died 4/5 years ago.
