From information obtained from the local Burmese the company of the battalion were ambushing an area which was regarded as a Japanese transit camp. Food was supposedly hidden in the area. We were all in position when suddenly a member of the Signal Plattoon had listened to his radio and suddenly shouted out that the ‘War in Europe was over’ and Mr Churchill’s on the radio at 8pm. He was immediately arrested and locked up overnight. The next morning I was up before the Commanding officers to receive a ticking off as voices travelled far in the jungle. He was ‘Case Explained’ because of the unusual given circumstances.
