Going up Western Road one day we were very surprised to see men cutting the iron fences that surrounded the workhouse down, being of a curious nature we kids stopped and asked the men what they were doing? 鈥淥ur bit for the war effort, retorted one, 鈥淭heses are for the making of guns and tanks for our Army.鈥 鈥淐or!鈥 one of us said, 鈥淲ill there be enough when you鈥檝e taken all these down?鈥 There were lots of these iron railings surrounding the workhouse.
鈥淣ot nearly enough,鈥 replied the same man, 鈥淲e have to take all the Iron railings that we can find, including those around Summerfield Park鈥.
鈥淕reat!鈥 we said to each other as we walked away, 鈥淲e can go into the Park as often as we like without waiting for the gates to open or close.鈥
